The Modified Paper Drilling Machine

Client: UCP of Greater Birmingham – Adult Workshop

The adult workshop at UCP of Greater Birmingham provides nine-to-five employment for a number of adults with cerebral palsy (roughly 15 on any given day).  As part of this employment program, they are working on a project collating UAB health care notebooks.  To do this, they need a machine to drill large amounts of papers so the employees could compile it in 3-ring binders.  Their existing paper puncher was a cheap electric device that would overheat after a few uses, thereby slowing the overall productivity of the employees.
A Lassco Product’s Spinnit Floor Model FMMS-1-R was purchased, which is a self contained, three hole paper drilling machine that operates on 110 volt current. Paper is drilled by placing the paper on the paper table and pressing a foot pedal to raise the table into the drilling bits. Guides built into the table align the paper. The machine, as purchased, has exposed fixed drilling spindles and no mechanism to prevent injuries when the spindles are turning. The paper table traverses upward and is controlled by a foot pedal that the operator pushes downward.

The following modifications were made to the existing machine: 1) A safety cage was constructed with ¼ inch plexiglass to enclose the entire drilling area to prevent access during the drilling operation.  2) Electronic circuits were created that i) lock the cage doors while the machine was running, ii) prevent the drill bits from spinning if the cage is open; iii) enable an individual to turn the machine on and off via a head switch; and iv) allows the staff member to control the master switch.  These modifications enable disabled clients to participate safely in the drilling process while preventing injuries. A safety manual was included with the delivery.  The completed product is shown in Figure 2 – total cost approximately $2,350.
