The UAB Child Stander

The UAB Child Stander

Client: UCP of Greater Birmingham – Children’s Day Care
This project was developed to serve children at UCP who are unable to stand on their own. The device functions much like a cot that rotates from horizontal to vertical, and holds the child in a standing position. The device was designed to overcome problems with another existing device, including a difficult hand cranking method to rotate the stander vertically and limitations of adjustability of the straps and foot rests. The existing stander held the child suspended nearly one foot above the ground, making them taller than and impeding interaction with, their peers. The existing device was of constructed of wood and steel, and was rather plain and not “child friendly”. The UAB Child Stander was constructed so that it could be rotated into the vertical position passively, using the weight of the child to induce a rotating moment about the pivot point. Hydraulic dampers (Enidine, ADA 5000 series) provide control the velocity of rotation when inclining and declining the backboard. A two-rotor latch device with manual release is used to lock the board in horizontal position. A ball-joint stop mechanism was implemented to lock mechanism in vertical position. The completed device, along with the design team and UCP children, are shown in Figure 1. Included with the delivery was a safety manual that provides guidance for safe usage by a qualified therapist or physician. Total cost was approximately $900 not including the stainless steel tubing which was purchased previously. Figure 1. The UAB Child Stander. Shown at right with children from UCP, the three gentlemen were the senior design team: John Mayer, Blane Vines and Torry Johnson. On left is shown the backside of the stander, including the mechanical fasteners, rate controllers and bearings.
